Thomas Cable was born on June 17, 1942, in Conroe, Texas, United States.
After graduating from Conroe High School, Tom attended Yale University, where he received his Bachelor of Arts in 1964. After a year in Paris he entered graduate studies in English at the University of Texas at Austin, receiving his Ph.D. in 1969 with a specialization in English language and linguistics.
Tom Cable's first full-time faculty position was at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He returned to the University of Texas at Austin in 1972 as an Associate Professor. Since then he has held four visiting appointments in France - at the Universities of Paris and Montpellier. He retired as a member of the English Department’s faculty at the University of Texas in 2011.
Cable's two main areas of research and teaching are the forms of English poetry from its origins to the present and the history of the English language. He is the author of five books, which include: The Meter and Melody of Beowulf (1974), A History of the English Language (1978), A Companion to Baugh and Cable's History of the English Language (1983), The Union of Words and Music in Medieval Poetry (1991), and The English Alliterative Tradition (1991).
