Background
Hite, Shere D. was born on November 2, 1942 in St. Joseph, Missouri, United States.
(The first novel by famous anecdotal sex researcher Hite s...)
The first novel by famous anecdotal sex researcher Hite sends up American manners, mores, and media sometimes delightingly as her Ariadne, sort of a female Candide from heaven, and Jupiter (Ariadne's dog) visit Earth...Sequences set in heaven are the most amusing as when Ariadne rubs shoulders with Truman, Lenin, and Cleopatra and her pet asp, Jennifer: Gertrude Stein keeps trying to impress Ariadne's Innocent Abroad with the appropriateness of wearing sensible shoes, while Cleo scoffs, reapplies makeup, and proceeds to sleep with George Orwell, all the while lamenting her lost Antony. On Earth, Ariadne catches hell from media critics representing their powerful, moneyed bosses. Her crime: having written The Meaning of It All, a book of social criticism demonstrating the destruction of the environment and many species and the facts that inequality abounds and that women, according to her research, are unhappy and dissatisfied with their husbands. The last, of course, is what draws the press attacks; meanwhile, Ariadne finds love and happiness despite it all."" - Booklist.

(A reproduction of the classic text, unavailable now for m...)
A reproduction of the classic text, unavailable now for more than a decade, with a new introduction by the author. The Hite Report, first published in 1976, was a sexual revolution in six hundred pages. To answer sensitive questions dealing with the most intimate details of women's sexuality, Hite's innovation was simple: she asked women, a lot of them, everything--and published the results. One hundred thousand women, ages fourteen to seventy-eight, were asked what they do and don't like about sex; how orgasm really feels, with and without intercourse; how it feels not to have an orgasm during sex; the importance of clitoral stimulation and masturbation; and to name the greatest pleasures and frustrations of their sexual lives, among many other questions. The Hite Report declares that orgasm is easy and strong for women, given the right stimulation; that most women have orgasm most easily during masturbation or clitoral stimulation by hand; that sex as we define it is a cultural institution, not a biological one; and that attitudes must change to include the stimulation women desire.

Through 3,421 interviews with women, Shere Hite draws together material on women's relationships at a time when long term partnerships are still the norm and partner-swapping is less seductive than it was in the 1960s. It illustrates how far from equality relationships between men and women remain.
