Sherwood Kiraly was born on October 23, 1949, in Chicago, Illinois, United States. He is a son of Julius J. Kiraly, an internal auditor, and Sherry (Kreidler) Kiraly, a medical secretary.
In 1972, Sherwood graduated from Knox College with a Bachelor of Arts degree, specializing in theatre.
Sherwood began his literary career in 1990 with the novel "California Rush", the story of former major-league baseball player Charlie Tyke, who serves as the novel’s narrator.
In 1995, "California Rush" was followed with "Diminished Capacity", a novel about an eighty-year-old man with a valuable baseball card. The novel’s elderly hero is Rollie Zerbs, whose card is valued in the thousands of dollars. When Zerbs learns of an auction to be held in Chicago, he decides to travel there and sell the card. Accompanying him on his trek is his nephew Cooper, who has been left dejected and rather forgetful, following a head injury. And while Zerbs is pursued by thieves, determined to obtain the card, Cooper becomes involved with a former love.
In 1996, Kiraly published his "Big Babies", a novel about the misadventures of A. J. Fleger and his adopted brother Sterling. Fleger's life is one of aimlessness. Sterling, however, aspires to an acting career. Unfortunately, he blunders, while performing on a televised comedy show. Then he proves so successful on a televised crime re-enactment, that his neighbors have him arrested. A. J., meanwhile, falls in love with a woman he meets at a support group for people, who have endured public humiliation. A reviewer for Publishers Weekly called "Big Babies" "hilarious" and complimented Kiraly on his "wry observations about contemporary American culture".
Since September 2011, Sherwood has been holding a post of a Visiting Professor of English and Theatre at Knox College, where he conducts writing workshops in fiction, playwriting, and screenwriting.
Besides being a writer and educator, Sherwood Kiraly worked for sixteen years at a national newspaper syndicate through four name changes: Publishers-Hall, Field, News America, and North America Syndicate. His positions included comics editor and managing editor. Moreover, he served as a syndicate editor for columnists, such as Ann Landers, Erma Bombeck, and Roger Ebert.
Also, Kiraly wrote and performed, as an actor and musician, the full-length play "Hug It Out", the final production of the second Knox New Plays Festival in Spring 2016.

Quotes from others about the person
"Sherwood Kiraly genuinely takes an interest in his students — not just as students, but as artists and as human beings. He always makes himself accessible to discuss their writing or any ideas they have for future pieces, and always has the perfect anecdotes to share. In addition, he has even collaborated with his students on projects, that they have had, such as participating in a reading of a student-written play. He has a wonderful respect for the works, that his students create, whether it's their first piece or their fiftieth, and is there to guide them every step of the way as they write. Taking a class with, talking to, or even just seeing Sherwood in passing is always a treat." — Alyssa Gill
Sherwood married Patti J. Reynolds, a jeweler, on February 7, 1987. The couple gave birth to one child, named Katie. Also, Kiraly has a child from a previous marriage, whose name is Keaton.
