Taffinder, Sherwoode Ayerst was born on March 18, 1884 in Council Bluffs, Iowa, United States. Son of William Geoffrey and Mina (Ayerst) Taffinder.

Commissioned ensign, United States Navy and advanced through grades to rear admiral, 1940. Served on Asiatic Station, 1906-1909. Pacific, 1909-1913; Atlantic, 1913-1921.

Pacific, 1912-1924; with Naval Mission to Peru, S.A., 1924-1926. Canal Zone, 1928-1930. War College, 1932-1935.

Navy Department, 1936-1939. Chief staff United States Fleet, 1940-1941. Commander Cruiser Division 5, Pacific Fleet, 1941.
