After graduating from Tokyo University (1883) proceeded to Germany for research in bacteria and serum under Robert Koch (1885).
Career
Upon returning home was appointed director of Research Institute of Contagious Diseases by the Ministry of Home Affairs, where he laid the foundation for research in bacteriology and epidemics in this country.
Later founded his own research institute, named Kitazato Laboratory in direct competition with official laboratories (1914). Shibasaburo Kitazato was subsequently Dean of the Medical Faculty of Keio University. For many years was President of Japan Medical Association and rendered services to social hygiene. His reincluded works on antidiphtheria serum, pest-bacilli and tubercle germs.
