Shichiku Sugawara was born in Sendai, Miyagi Prefecture in 1863.
Shichiku Sugawara went to Tokyo (1880) and was adopted into the family of one Sugawara, farmer. He studied under Keisai Nakazawa, a Confucian scholar of the Sendai Clan.
At first he composed haiku of the traditional school under the pseudonym of Bisho. He changed to the Nihon School and published Sandaishu with Hekigoto Kawahigashi.
