Wnen Emperor Konoe died, Emperor Goshirakawa succeeded him although Prince Shigehito was generally expected to do so. Ex-Emperor Sutoku was greatly angered and this caused the Hogen War in 1156. After the war, the prince was pardoned and became a priest at the Ninnaji Temple.
