Shigemasa Kitao studied painting by himself using wood-block prints as his models, and developed his own style.
Shigemasa Kitao began painting when about 16 years old and continued to do so until his death. Did not make many color prints, doing mostly illustrations for story books. Was influenced by various painters and by the Harunobu Suzuki, Torii and Katsukawa schools, but had his own characteristics and was regarded as the originator of the Kitao style.
