Shigeo Matsueda was born in 1905 in Saga, Japan.
He graduated from Tokyo University in 1927.
He studied in China and after returning to Japan, taught at various universities on Chinese language and literature, and translated books by Lu Hsun and Chou Tso-jen. In 1951 he completed the translation of Hun Lou-meng after taking 10 years. During the above period, served as assistant professor of Kyushu University in 1941 and assistant professor of Tokyo University in 1947. He became professor of Tokyo Municipal University and concurrently instructor of Tokyo University and Waseda University.
