Shigeyoshi Takano was born in 1877 in Mito, Ibaraki, Japan.
Studied Chinese classics under Jikei Kami during his early days and at the same time attended Mito Tobukan, a fencing schoool. Proceeding to Tokyo he became a student of Sasaburo Takano and mastered the Ono-Ittoryu school of fencing.
He was appointed fencing teacher for the staff of South Manchurian Railway and was most popular as a skillful teacher.
He was awarded the title hanshi (the highest rank of a fencing master) (1922) but in a command duel before the Emperor was defeated by Moriji Moehida in the final bout.
