Shima served Mitsunari Ishida, a war lord of the Toyotomi Camp. He was much favored by Mitsunari who is said to have given half of his territory to Shima. He followed Mitsunari in Hideyoshi Toyotomi's campaigns in Korea. After the death of Hideyoshi, Katsutake advised Mitsunari on strategy. He became missing in the Sekigahara Battle (1600).
His son Yosbikatsu also fought bravely in the Sekigahara battle and was killed.
