Served as chief priest of the Todaiji Temple in Nara. Much respected by Emperor Seiwa, he was allowed by the Emperor to proceed into the Palace compound on a carriage (864) becoming the first priest accorded such an honor.

He was initiated into Mikkyo (esoteric Buddhism) by Kukai, his elder brother.
