Abo Shinno was born in 792 in Kyoto, Japan. His parents were Emperor Heizei and Fujii no Fujiko. He was the third son of Emperor Heizei.

He was appointed vice-commander of the Imperial forces' headquarters at Dazaifu (in Fukuoka Prefecture, Kyushu). He requested and obtained from the Imperial Court the family name of Arihara for his sons, Yukihira and Narihira. Just before his death in 842, he reported to the Emperor of the sinister rebel designs of Tachibana-no-Hayanari and Tomo-no-Kowamine.
Connections
Abo was a founder of the Arihara Family. In 826, his sons Yukihira, Narihira - both prominent poets - Morihira and Nakahir were given the surname Ariwara. Among his other children was the scholar and poet Ōe no Otondo.
