Shinno Tsunenaga was born in 1324 and was the sixth son of Emperor Godaigo and Renshi Fujiwara.
Prince Tsunenaga distinguished himself in many wars as commander of Imperial army. In 1336 when Takauji Ashikaga revolted against the Imperial Court, Emperor Godaigo and Prince Tsunenaga disguised themselves and entered Enryakuji Temple where they confronted the rebel. Takauji proposed a peace treaty, but the Emperor suspicious of his real intentions, ordered the Prince to make good his way to Hokuriku district and seek the aid of Yoshisada Nitta. The scheme, however, failed and the following year Ashikaga captured Kanagasaki Fort (Fukui Prefecture), and the Prince barely managed to escape, but was later taken captive and imprisoned at Kazanin, Kyoto where he poisoned himself.
