Began studying the doctrines of Ansai Yamazaki at an early age under Naokata Sato, to enter the services of Umayabashi (Maebashi) Clan in Gumma Prefecture. Later resigning, he became a disciple of Wang Yang-ming, the noted Chinese Confucian scholar, and taught in Kyoto, Osaka and Edo.
