Shizan Goto was born in Mino (Gifu Prefecture),

In his time, he was considered as the best writer of Chinese prose and Kyokuso Hirose the best writer of Chinese poetry in Osaka. He collated and revised the writing of Sanyo, his master.
He married the daughter of Shochiku Shinozaki.
