Left a middle school in Sendai to become an apprentice at a shop. Though in poor straits he continued studying by himself.
He became a dramatic critic for a newspaper.
Later together with Sadanji Ichikawa attempted to reform Kabuki plays, and became associated with Bungei Kyokai (literary association). Founded Koshu Gekidan (theatrical troupe) with Takeo Kawai,a noted Shimpa (new style) school actor, with the idea of raising the level of Shimpa actors.
His maiden play Noboru Asahi Chosen Taiheiki (History of the Rising Sun in Korea), which he wrote for the Yomiuri Shimbun newspaper established his fame as a dramatist in 1894.
