Shokin Fujiwara was born in 1268 in Echizen Province (Fukui Prefecture), Japan.

He studied under Priest Tettsu of the Daijoji Temple in Kaga Province (Ishikawa Prefecture).
He became a priest at the age of 12 and became later a disciple of Gikai and became head priest of the Sojiji Temple with Gikai's approval in 1295.
Emperor Godaigo granted him a tablet on which the Emperor wrote the name of his temple to be hung at its gate. The Emperor also made the Daijoji Temple one of the Court-protected temples. He was revered by posterity as the restorer of the Soto Sect. The Court gave him posthumously the name of Josai-Taishi.
