Shotetsu was born in 1381 in Bitchii Province (Okayama Prefecture), Japan.
He studied poetry under Tametada Reizei (around 1434).
Shotetsu was director of the sutra-copying section of the Tofukuji Temple. Despising the poetry of the Nijo and Reizei schools, he wrote in tradition of Sadaie Fujiwara.
His early poems totaling 20000 and recorded in 36 volumes were destroyed by fire. His subsequent works, totaling over 10000 waka, are contained in the Sakon Wakashu.
Once he was ordered confined at Yamashma for composing poems satirical of the trends of the times. Although he was respected by both the Court and general public, none of his works is contained in any anthology compiled by the Court. He wrote Tesshoki Monogatari, a book of essays on waka poetry.
