After graduating from the university, Shuji Kunikida joined the editorial staff of Kokumin Shimbun, where he soon gained prominence with his forthright writings. He and his brother Doppo were among the most distinguished disciples of Soho Tokutomi. Besides his brilliance, Shuji Kunikida was more eccentric than his brother and there were a lot of amusing anecdotes about him. Later he became chief editor of "Kobe Shimbun", then moved to "Yomiuri Shimbun", before retiring from journalism to join Kawasaki Shipyard.
