Shumpo Takahashi was born in 1805 Japan. His family served Nagaoka family, a councilor of Kumamoto Clan, as physicians.
First learned Chinese medicine and then studied Dutch medicine under Gendo Takeuchi in Nagasaki.
He became physician in ordinary to Lord Hosokawa in Kumamoto. At that time a smallpox epidemic hit the area and his five-year-old son was among the fatal victims. This tragedy spurred him to study vaccination methods under a Dutch physician, after which he set about educating people to the benefits of vaccination (1848).
