Shundai Ishikawa came into prominence when he opposed the Yamagata Cabinet’s bill which was aimed to control religion (1897). Late in life retired to Kanazawa, from where he supported Koen Otani who was the abbot of Honganji Temple. Later he became a director of Higashi Honganji Temple, belonging to the Otani sect.
