Studied under Kassho Nawa. Teitoku Matsunaga was his teacher in calligraphy.
Went to Edo (1633) and served Shogun Iemitsu Tokugawa, who gave him the title of Hogen (high rank given to priests, physicians, and artists). He supervised the compilation of "The Genealogy of Families in the Kan-ei Era". Was in charge of diplomatic affairs, such as invitation of Korean envoys. Wrote many books.
