Sigmund Brouwer was born in 1959, in Red Deer, Canada.
Brouwer received a degree in commerce from Calvin College. He then moved to Carleton College, where he obtained his degree in journalism.
Brouwer worked as an editor at the National Racquetball Magazine and was a co-founder and lecturer of The Young Writer’s Institute from 1993. Since that time he has also been engaged in a freelance writing activity.
He is the author of novels Morning Star, Sun Dance and Thunder Voice, written under a pseudonym S. W. Brouwer. He also wrote novels Blazer Drive, Chief Honor, Knights Honor and others. He has created juvenile series such as the “Accidental Detectives”, the “Winds of Light”, the “Lightning on Ice” books, and, with Wayne Davidson, the “Dr. Drabble” adventures. All of these works for young people feature elements of Christianity, though reviewers disagree somewhat on how strongly these elements are emphasized. Brouwer’s better-known titles for adults include Moon Basket, Double Helix, and Blood Ties; these also tackle issues important to a traditional interpretation of the Christian religion. He is also responsible for nonfiction titles about activities such as scuba diving and snowboarding.
Moon Basket is part of a series of novels for adult Christian readers of westerns and mysteries featuring Brouwer’s protagonist Samuel Keaton. Moon Basket takes place in Laramie, Wyoming, in the year 1874.
Double Helix concerns a laboratory where fetal tissue research has gone horrifyingly awry.
Blood Ties concerns the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s pursuit of a serial killer whose crimes began in 1973. They think they have solved the case, but after many years, murders with similar circumstances begin occurring again.
Generally, Brouwer authored more than one hundred books and four million printed books.
Brouwer is regarded as a bestselling author, who published and printed a great number of novels. He received the Alberta Film and Literary Arts Writing Grant two times. He is the winner of the Arthur Ellis Award for Canada’s best young adult mystery of the year, as well as the TD Children’s Book Awards for his novel Dead Man’s Switch. Brouwer's novel for grownups, Thief of Glory was selected as the Book of the Year for the American Christy Awards and is a winner of the Alberta’s Readers Choice Awards.
