Kool began his career as a Bachelor of Science degree in Marine Science and Biology from the University of Southern California in 1982. Seven years later he earned his Ph.D. in Zoology from George Washington University.
Kool began his career as a curatorial associate at Harvard Museum of Comparative Zoology in 1988. Since 1994 he has been an adjunct professor of biology at Boston College.
Kool is a member of Willi Hennig Society, American Malacological Society and Sigma Xi.
