Sitta von Reden was born in 1962 in Hanover, Germany.
In 1979, Sitta von Reden graduated from high school in Hanover. From 1980 to 1982 she was educated at the University of Freiburg, where she received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics and History. From 1982 to 1987 she studied History and Latin at the Free University of Berlin and earned a Master of Arts degree. From 1987 to 1990 Sitta did Doctoral studies at the University of Cambridge.
Sitta von Reden began her career, as Research Assistant of Ancient History at the Free University of Berlin, where she served from 1983 to 1986. From 1987 to 1990 she took the post of Undergraduate Supervisor at St John's College and Peterhouse Cambridge. In 1990 she accepted the position of Junior Research Fellow at Queen's College Oxford where she worked until 1992. In 1995-96 she was visiting scholar at the University of Cambridge and in 1996-97 at the University of Cologne.
In 1992, Reden joined the University of Bristol where she was a Lecturer and Senior Lecturer of Classics until 2005. In 2005 she accepted the post of Lecturer and Chair of Ancient History at the University of Augsburg until 2008. In 2006, she was a Full Professor of Classics at Princeton University and in 2013-14 she spent a year at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton. From 2008 to 2009 she worked as a Temporary Associate Professor at the University of Münster, Institute of ancient history and Epigraphy. In 2009 she received the same position at the Ludwig-Maximilians-University Munich, holding it until 2010.
Since 2010, Sitta is a Professor of Ancient History at the University of Freiburg and holds the Chair of Ancient History. In 2011 she became a sub-project leader of the Collaborative Research Center "Heroes - Heroizations - Heroisms" at the University of Freiburg. She is Principal Investigator of the ERC-funded interdisciplinary project "Beyond the Silk Road. Economic Development, Frontier Zones and Inter-imperialism in the Afro-Eurasian World Region, 300 BCE to 300 CE". From 2017, she has been head of the Numismatic Hismun project with Peter Eich, which is funded by the state of Baden-Württemberg as part of the "Kleine Fächer" initiative.
As author, Sitta von Reden wrote "Exchange in Ancient Greece" in 1995. She was an editor with Paul Cartledge and Paul Millett of "Kosmos: Essays in Order, Conflict, and Community in Classical Athens" that was written in 1998 and with Walter Scheidel "The Ancient Economy" in 2002. Her most recent book "Money in Classical Antiquity" came out in 2010. She also has been a contributor of articles on cultural economics to periodicals, including the Journal of Hellenic Studies.
Sitta von Reden is particularly known as the author of a number of books on money, exchange, and credit both in classical Athens and Hellenistic Egypt, as well as a contributor to other books and of articles on cultural economics to periodicals.
Together with Christelle Fischer-Bovet, she co-hosted an international conference in 2016 Comparing the Seleucid and Ptolemaic Empires: the Role of Local Elites and Populations.
For Reden’s project "Beyond the Silk Road" in 2017, she received an Advanced Grant from the European Research Council (ERC), endowed with € 2.5 million.
