Ernst Pöppel was born on April 29, 1940, in Schwessin, Farther Pomerania (present-day Świeszyno, West Pomeranian Voivodeship, Poland). He is a son of Ernst Pöppel, a farmer, and Elfriede (Bartelt) Pöppel, a homemaker.
During the period from 1959 till 1960 and between 1961-1963, Ernst attended the University of Freiburg in Freiburg im Breisgau. Later, he studied Psychology and Biology in Munich, before he received a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Psychology from the University of Innsbruck in 1968.
In 1974, Ernst received his first habilitation in Sensory Physiology (Dr. med. habil.) and two years later, in 1976, he attained the second one in Psychology (Dr. phil. habil.).
Also, Pöppel is a recipient of an honorary doctoral degree from the Russian State University of the Humanities.
During the period from 1960 till 1961, Ernst served in the German Navy. Between 1964-1968, he carried out research on temporal perception and circadian rhythms at Max-Planck-Institute of Behavioral Physiology. Also, from 1969 to 1970, Ernst did research on neurophysiology of vision at Max-Planck-Institute of Psychiatry in Munich.
In 1971, he was appointed a research associate at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, a post he held till 1973. Between 1972-1973, Pöppel was a staff scientist at the Neuroscience Research Program (NRP) in Boston. It was at that time, that Ernst, together with Richard Held and Douglas Frost, described a phenomenon of residual vision, which became known as blindsight.
In 1976, Pöppel was appointed a Professor of Medical Psychology at the Medical Faculty of Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich. The following year, in 1977, he established the Institute for Medical Psychology and the same year, Pöppel became its director, a position he held until 2008.
From 1992 to 1997, Pöppel served as a board member of the national Research Center Juelich, where he was in charge of the Life Sciences (Brain Research, Biotechnology), Environmental Sciences and Mathematical Modeling. Later, in 1997, together with a neuroscientist Gerhard Neuweiler, Pöppel established the Humanwissenschaftliches Zentrum (HWZ – Human Science Center) of Munich University, where since that year Ernst has been serving as a Chief Executive Officer.
Also, since 2000, Pöppel has been holding a post of a co-director of Parmenides Center for the Study of Thinking. Since 2001, he has been working as a Scientific Director of the Generation Research Program in Bad Tölz, Germany, and since 2006, he has been a co-director of the FESTO Program of Applied Knowing.
During his lifetime, Pöppel held other positions, including a staff member on editorial board of Consciousness and Cognition journal; a guest reviewer for several national and international journals; a grant reviewer for the National Science Foundation, the National Institutes of Health and Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft.
Also, Ernst collaborated with many scientists from different countries, such as the United States, Japan, China and Russian Federation.
During his career, Pöppel authored and edited several books. For example, in his book "Mindworks: Time and Conscious Experience", he presented findings from his years of research on such topics, as how people construct their inner experiences of time and space, periodic patterns in speech and biorhythms. In addition, he discussed the work of other researchers, such as Jerome Lettvin, David Hubei and Torsten Wiesel.
