Sogo Sakuma was born in 1604 in Japan. His real name was Sogo Kiuchi. Was called also Sogoro Sakura.
After Masamori Hotta was made lord of Sakura in Shimo-osa Province (Chiba Prefecture), with a fief of 130,000 koku (1642), he exacted heavy taxes from the people in his territory. On behalf of peasants reduced to a state of extreme poverty, Sogo made a direct appeal to the Shogun in spite of the Shogunate ban on such an action. For the offense, he and five members of his family were crucified. His action inspired plays and popular stories, which indirectly encouraged peasants' uprisings.
