Sonoda served with Sumitomo Bank (1919-1921). Later he became manager of Y.M.C.A. headquarters, professor of Commercial Department of Higher Course at Tohoku Gakuin (Academy) College, professor of Kagoshima Higher Commercial School, professor of Yokohama Semmon Gakko (Yokohama College).
When above college was elevated to the status of a university and was renamed Kanagawa University Sonoda was appointed dean of its Economics Department and also director of the university.
He held additional posts of lecturer of Meiji University, professor of Rodo Gakuin (Labor Academy), Senshu University and director of Minshu Shakaishugi Domei (League of Democratic Socialism).
