Sadakichi Tanabe was born in 1847 in Edo (now Tokyo, Japan).
Sadakichi Tanabe began career as inspector of schools for the Education Ministry (1875). He became a director of the Tokyo Prefectural Normal School (1879).
Leaving government service (1881) he joined the Sumitomo Bank as an assistant manager and was soon promoted director of the bank's Kobe Branch. He became manager and concurrently director of the bank's Head Office (1895). He stayed with the bank till his resignation (1904).
