(Excerpt from One Thing Is Certain: A Novel But he would ...)
Excerpt from One Thing Is Certain: A Novel But he would have cut down the tree, and chopped it into Splinters and fired its stump, if he had known that his Older daughter, Louellen, met Mart Bladen in the evening before lamp-lighting time under its concealing Shade, and that they sat on his excellent high snake-rail fence and dis cussed whether or not she should run away and marry him. Louellen, in her full lilac print crisply sprigged in purple, was firm and slim, her features cut with delicate precision, her eyebrows mere black pencil strokes, her short full upper lip curved like one of Romney's ladies. She challenged interest, as do all people of two natures. She had moods of being cool and definite and determined, sure of herself as only utter youth and inexperience warrant. At other times her gray eyes lit with sapphire lights, her mouth curled up irresistibly and any daring foolish impulse ruled her. Under stress she was confused, child-like. To-day she was eagerly in earnest. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Sophie Kerr was born on August 23, 1880 in Denton, Maryland, United States. She was the daughter of Jonathan Williams Kerr, a nurseryman, and Amanda Catherine Sisk.
Sophie Kerr graduated from Denton High School in 1895. In 1898 she received the Bachelor of Arts degree from Hood College in Maryland and in 1901 she earned the Master of Arts degree from the University of Vermont.
In 1899 Kerr sold her first short story to Country Gentleman. She began newspaper work as an editor of the women's page of the Pittsburgh Chronicle-Telegraph. Shortly thereafter she edited the women's Sunday supplement of the Pittsburgh Gazette-Times. She continued to write short stories, many of which were published by Woman's Home Companion of which she later became managing editor.
In 1917 Kerr published her first novel, The Blue Envelope, which dealt with a young girl unwillingly involved in a spy ring. Thereafter she wrote twenty-two novels and several hundred short stories. Much of Kerr's magazine writing--mainly for Ladies' Home Journal, Collier's, and Saturday Evening Post--mixed suspense and humor with romantic love. A skillful writer, she used plots typical of fiction in women's magazines and won a large and devoted audience. In 1922 Kerr published One Thing Is Certain, a novel about a young woman whose marriage is destroyed by domestic and religious conflict.
Mareea-Maria (1929), a novel about a farmer who marries an Italian girl (to his mother's dismay), is set in the backwater country of her native Maryland. Girl into Woman (1932), the story of a young woman who runs away from her domineering father to marry a rough and unprincipled mechanic, stands apart from Kerr's other work because it contains little humor. The type of light humor most readers expected is exemplified by the headnote to her 1949 novel, As Tall as Pride: "The human and animal characters of this book are entirely fictitious and any similarity to actual people, cats or horses is purely coincidental. "
Kerr collaborated with Anna Steese Richardson on a play, Big-Hearted Herbert, which was produced in 1934. It was, one critic said, "good clean fun, laid on with a steam-shovel. " Her love for good food led her to write the narrative sections for a cookbook (written with June Platt) entitled The Best I Ever Ate (1953). =
Kerr's writing did not touch upon enduring themes that broaden, deepen, or sharpen a reader's sense of human experience. But her fiction did provide readers with a satisfying escape from the everyday world. On these terms her writing was polished, professional, and memorable for its humorous interludes.
