Sora Kawai first served the Lord of Nagashima Clan, then proceeding to Edo studied classics and haiku poetry under Basho Matsuo. He was very attached to Basho and even did household work for him. His faithfulness to his master soon came to be a byword and he was referred to as the "faithful companion." He accompanied Basho on the latter's tour of northern Japan.
