Soshitsu Shimai was a Japanese trader and tea ceremony master. Well-known wealthy merchant in Hakata, he made great profits by trading with China, Luzon and Siam.
Education
Soshitsu Shimai was a disciple of Soeki and Sokyu of the Sen family, great tea ceremony masters, he was favored by Nobunaga Oda and Hideyoshi Toyotomi.
Career
He went to Korea (1590) at the order of Hideyoshi to investigate its terrain and geography preparatory to Hideyoshi's invasion of Korea. He is said to have advised Hideyoshi that an invasion of China would be reckless.
