1860-1878 subsequently cleaner, bar help, store clerk, worker, book-salesman. 1873 first work published. Influenced by Pushkin, Kol’tsov, Nekrasov and Nikitin.
1896 returned to Nizovka and concentrated on his favorite pursuits--lit and agric. Portrayed Russian rural way of life. A number of his works were set to music by composers Rebikov, Kyui, Bakaleynikov, etc.
His songs were in the repertoires of Chaliapin, Vyal’tseva, etc. 1938 a memorial-lit museum dedicated to him was founded in settlement Zavidovo, Kalinin Oblast.
