Sripad Rao Kilpady was born on 13th November 1906 in Kundapur, Dakshina Kannada district and his family moved to Bangalore in 1907.

His early schooling was in Bangalore and he graduated in Bachelor of Science (Geology) from Central College, Bangalore and Master of Science with distinction in 1932.
Sripad Rao Kilpady joined as Demonstrator in Geology, Central College and later became a Lecturer from 1933-1946. He was appointed as Reader and Head of the Geology Department of the Nagpur University in 1946 and as Professor and Head in 1955. In 1965 he was the guest of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Moscow, under the Scientists Exchange Program for one month. He was elected Fellow of the Indian Academy of Sciences in 1958 and National Academy of Science in 1953.
He was a member of Mineralogical Society of London and Expert Committee in Geology (University Grant Commission).
Sripad Rao Kilpady was a very soft spoken person and not very communicative. Reading had been a chronic affiliation with him. He was a deeply spiritual person.
