Gleissberg began his career as a postdoctoral fellow at the Institute of Molecular and Cellular Biosciences of the University of Tokyo in 1997. A year later he took the position of an assistant researcher and lecturer at the Institute of Special Botany and Botanic Garden at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz. Then in 2006, Stefan became an assistant professor of the Department of Environmental and Plant Biology at Ohio University. Since 2013 he has been a lecturer of the Department of Biomedical Sciences at the same university. Also nowadays he is a professor of plant biology at Ohio University and an independent researcher.
Gleissberg is a member of the American Society of Plant Biologists, Botanical Society of America, Ohio Ornithological Society and German Botanical Society.
