Hohmann received a Ph.D. from the Institute of Microbiology at TU Darmstadt in 1987.
Hohmann began his career as a postdoctoral researcher at the Institute of Microbiology of Technische Hochschule Darmstadt in 1986. Four years later he took the same position and a project leader position at the Laboratory of Molecular Cell Biology of Catholic University of Leuven. Then in 1996, Stefan became an associate professor at the Department of Cell and Molecular Biology and Microbiology at the University of Gothenburg. Also he served as a research professor of the Swedish Research Council at that university from 1999 to 2005.
In 2001, Hohmann became a professor in Molecular Microbial Physiology at the Department of Chemistry and Molecular Biology at the University of Gothenburg. Since 2015 he has been a professor and Head of the Department of Biology and Biological Engineering at Chalmers University of Technology.
