Grundy studied English and German philology at Southern Methodist University in Dallas where he gained his B.A. He also spent one year as an exchange student at the University of St Andrews, Scotland, and a year as an exchange student in Bonn, Germany. In 1995, Grundy received his PhD from the Department of Anglo-Saxon, Norse and Celtic, University of Cambridge with a dissertation on Odin: "The Cult of Óðinn: God of Death?".
Grundy published, as Kveldulf Gundarsson, two books on Germanic neopaganism and Germanic magic before publishing his first novel. He has since edited and co-written both editions of the handbook of "The Troth", "Our Troth", and written other works on ancient and modern Germanic paganism and Germanic culture.
Grundy is best known for his modern adaptations of legendary sagas and also a non-fiction writer on Germanic mythology, Germanic paganism, and Germanic neopaganism. He is cited by other writers on Germanic paganism inside and outside academia. He was nominated for Locus Award for Best Fantasy Novel and Locus Award for Best First Novel.
Stephan is a proponent of Asatru.
Stephan is married to Melodi Grundy since July 1, 1994. They now lives in Shinrone, County Offaly, Ireland.
