Stephanie Torbert attended the School for the American Craftsman in Rochester, New York, in the summer of 1967 and earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts the next year from the University of New Mexico, Albuquerque. She received a Master of Fine Arts from the Visual Studies Workshop (The State University of New York at Buffalo) in 1971.
A freelance photographer and consultant, Stephanie Torbert taught photography at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design in 1977-1978, at North Hennepin Community College, Brooklyn Center, Minnesota, in 1974-1975 and at Urban Arts Program, Minneapolis Institute of Art in 1970-1971.
Stephanie Torbert headed the Art Department of the Southeast Alternatives Free School in Minneapolis in 1972- 1973 and was head of Visual Communications at Rochester Urban Center M.C.C. at SUNY, Buffalo, in 1969-1970.
In 1975 Stephanie Torbert won an NEA Minnesota Survey Grant and in 1974 received a grant from the Minnesota State Arts Council.
