Stephen Inwood studied at Dulwich College where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1964. He also attended Balliol College from 1965 to 1968. Inwood studied at St Antony's College and received a Doctor of Philosophy degree in 1971.
Stephen Inwood started his career as a lecturer at the University of West London in 1973. He held this post until 1999. In 2000 he took up a post of a professor at NYU London and in 2001 he became a research fellow in the Centre for Local History Studies at Kingston University.
Stephen Inwood published his first book, A History of London, in 1998. His next book was published in 2002. Inwood wrote two more books about London. His most recent book was published in 2008. He lives in Richmond, west London, with his wife and three sons.
