He was educated at the University of King"s College, Dalhousie University, and Emory University, and has been a Fellow in the English Department of Harvard University and a Fellow in the Faculty of Divinity of Trinity College, Toronto.

He is the founding President of Ralston College, a start-up institution of higher education in Savannah. He specializes in the literary history of philosophy, and his work has focused particularly on Boethius. Oxford University Press published his book The Consolation of Boethius as Poetic Liturgy in 2015.
Some years ago he was the founding Executive Director of Street George"s YouthNet, an educational mentoring program for inner-city youth in the North End district of Halifax, Nova Scotia, after which he was for two years a teaching fellow in the Foundation Year Programme, a core-text program for first-year undergraduates at the University of King"s College.
He also sits on the Board of the Neuroendocrine Tumor Research Foundation.
He is a citizen of both the United States and Canada, and is a member of the Mont Pelerin Society.
