A centre half, he played schoolboy football for Home Farm and spent his schooldays in Patrician College, Finglas, a school which has produced many Republic of Ireland underage internationals players, and most notably two full international players in Alan Moore (football player) and Ronnie Whelan. McGuinness made his League of Ireland debut for Home Farm against Street James" Gate on 11 October 1992. He joined Street Patrick"s Athletic in 1997 where he had a very successful four years before joining Dundalk where his stay was to be brief following their relegation in.
