Stephen Richard Prothero was born on November 13, 1960, in Cooperstown, New York, United States.
Prothero graduated from Yale University in 1982, with Bachelor of Arts degree (summa cum laude). He was also educated at Harvard University, receiving his master's degree in 1986, as well as his doctor's degree four years later.
Prothero joined Harvard University as an instructor in religion in 1988. Two years later he worked at Yale University at the position of a visiting lecturer in religious studies and American studies. For five years from 1990, Prothero held the position of an assistant professor of religious studies at Georgia State University. From 1996 till 2000, he served as an assistant professor of religion and director of undergraduate studies at Boston University, rising to an associate professor of religion that year. He still works there.
As the author, Prothero has published eight books, including Religious Literacy. He is a contributor of articles and reviews to scholarly journals, including Theosophical History, Tricycle: Buddhist Review, Quest, Religion and American Culture: A Journal of Interpretation and Harvard Theological Review, as well as to the Internet magazine Salon. Additionally, Prothero serves as a religion commentator on numerous radio programs and on television. He has held a post of a consultant on American religious history at the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History. Prothero writes and reviews for The New York Times Magazine, Wall Street Journal, Boston Globe, Washington Post, United States Today, Los Angeles Times, Salon and other publications.
