Stephen M. Buhler was born on October 23, 1954, in Brooklyn, New York, United States. He is the son of William and Barbara Buhler. His father was an athletic trainer, and his mother, a secretary in the front offices.
Stephen M. Buhler graduating from a Catholic high school in Long Beach. In 1976 he received a Bachelor of Arts degree from California State University, Long Beach. In 1983 he obtained a Master of Arts degree from the University of California, Los Angeles. In 1989 Buhler gained a Doctor of Philosophy degree from this university.
From 1976 to 1984 Stephen M. Buhler was a teacher of English and religious studies at a parochial school in Long Beach, California, and a chair of the English department from 1978 to 1980. From 1989 to 1995 he worked as an assistant professor at the University of Nebraska, Lincoln, an associate professor from 1995 to 2002, and has been a professor of English since 2002. In 2010 he was awarded Aaron Douglas Professorship for Teaching Excellence at this university. From 1991 to 1997 Buhler was a member of the board of directors at the Lincoln Friends of Chamber Music.
He is a contributor to books, including Approaches to Teaching Shakespeare's "Romeo and Juliet" (2000); and Shakespeare after Mass Media (2002). He is also a contributor of articles and reviews to periodicals, including English Literary Renaissance, Milton Studies, Journal of English and Germanic Philology, Renaissance Quarterly, and Spenser Studies.
In 2002, he helped found the Flatwater Shakespeare Company, which has been entertaining Lincoln and surrounding communities in the years since. He is also a performer. He played in a band called Fat Blue Cat and co-founded Tupelo Springfield in 2010. This band consists of Kelly Stage, also a UNL English professor, and Jack Vespa, a former UNL English professor.

2001Stephen M. Burler is a member of the Modern Language Association of America, the Renaissance Society of America, the Shakespeare Association of America, and the Spenser Society of America. He is also a life member of the Milton Society of America.
On August 27, 1983, Stephen M. Buhler married Carla May Rosenquist. They have a daughter, Teresa.
