Then he attended the University of Massachusetts Amherst and earned there a Master of Arts in 1975. Besides, Hoyos-Salcedo graduated from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. There he got a Doctor of Philosophy in 1995.
Pedro Hoyos-Salcedo served one year in the Colombian armed forces. Then he started his career as an educator. Hoyos-Salcedo worked as a Spanish teacher at schools in Darién in 1968-1971 and Tuluá in 1971-1973. After it, he taught at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. From 1975 to 1992, Pedro Hoyos-Salcedo spent at the Universidad de Caldas. In 1992 he returned to the United States and worked at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. To date, Hoyos-Salcedo has taught at Augusta University since 1995. He started as an assistant professor and then became an associate professor of Spanish language and contemporary Latin-American literature. Besides, Hoyos-Salcedo lecturer at colleges and universities in the United States and abroad, including Georgia Southern University, Roanoke College, and Augusta College. In addition to his educational career, he is active in the local Hispanic community, including general coordinator of folkloric musical group Policromía Musical and Hispanic dance group Viva Panamá.
Additionally, Pedro Hoyos-Salcedo is a writer. He has published and edited newspapers and magazines from his country as well as in the United States. He is also a contributor to periodicals, including Foreign Language Notes and Phoenix, and is an editor and director of Hispano.
