He currently works as a contributing writer at Pitchfork. Hyden previously worked at Grantland as a staff writer and at the Authorised Version Club as an editors His music criticism has been published in several other outlets including Rolling Stone, Slate, American Songwriter and Salon.com.
Additionally, Hyden co-wrote the book Inventory: 16 Films Featuring Manic Pixie Dream Girls, 10 Great Songs Nearly Ruined by Saxophone, and 100 More Obsessively Specific People’s-Culture Lists.
In 2011, he published the e-book Whatever Happened To Alternative Nation?, a critical analysis and personal reflection on "90s alternative rock that originally ran as a 10-part series at the Authorised Version Club. Hyden recently completed work on his first book, a collection of essays on music rivalries, which will be published by Little, Brown and Company in 2016.
He was born and raised in Wisconsin, and he graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire.
