Stillman Williams Robinson was a talented engineer, inventor, researcher in mechanical engineering, and author of several fundamental books about theory of machines and mechanisms. He is also noted for establishing one of the first mechanical engineering departments in a US university.
Background
Stillman Williams Robinson, son of Ebenezer and Adeline (Williams) Robinson, was born 6 March 1838 on his father's farm near South Reading, Vermont. He was descended from William Robinson, one of the early settlers of Newton, Massachussets.
Education
After attending the district school of his native town, he was bound out to a farmer, but his desire for more education and his interest in mechanics and mathematics caused him to give up farm work in 1855 to learn a trade as a means of acquiring money for his education.
He served a four-year apprenticeship as a machinist, studied in his spare time, and in January 1861 entered the University of Michigan.
He paid his expenses by working at his trade, attaining considerable proficiency as an instrument maker and during his college course devising a machine for graduating thermometers.
Career
For three years after his graduation (C. E. ) in 1863 he was an assistant engineer in the federal survey of the Great Lakes, then returned to the University of Michigan (1866 - 70), first as assistant and then as assistant professor in the department of mining engineering and geodesy.
Called to the Illinois Industrial University (now the University of Illinois) in 1870, he there established a department of mechanical engineering which was one of the first in the United States.
Eight years later he was made dean of the college of engineering, but resigned almost at once to accept the professorship of physics and mechanical engineering at Ohio State University. Here he continued until his resignation and retirement from academic life in 1895.
In the course of his career Robinson secured over forty patents, all of which were based upon scientific research and mathematical investigation. A group of eight or ten were concerned with shoe manufacture, the most profitable being the flattened and threaded shoe-sole fastening (Patent No. 265, 149, September 26, 1882). The development through a number of years of this device and the many machines which he contrived to manufacture it and to drive the fastening rapidly and automatically through the sole illustrates Robinson's ability to utilize his profound knowledge of mechanics in the solution of difficult practical problems.
The variety of his inventions was unusual and they were all profitable to him. Others which he patented were a clock escapement, a steam rock drill, valve gearing for steam engines, an improvement in the telephone, a metal piling and substructure, a gauge for measuring the flow of natural gas, an automatic air-brake mechanism, and a right-angled shaft coupling for transmitting power.
Throughout his career he was called in as a consultant in a variety of industrial and professional undertakings. Thus he was inspector of railways and bridges for the railroad commission of Ohio (1880 - 1884), consulting engineer for the Lick telescope and mountings (1887), and consulting engineer (1887 - 1890) for the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railroad, of which his brother, Albert Alonzo Robinson, was second vice-president and general manager.
He was the author of a number of important technical books and contributed many papers to technical journals. His report as a result of his inspection of the railways and bridges of Ohio includes what is probably some of his best scientific work; it was published by D. Van Nostrand under the title Railroad Economics in 1882.
His Principles of Mechanism, first published in 1896, is still widely used as a college textbook, and his Practical Treatise on the Teeth of Wheels, with the Theory and the Use of Robinson's Odontograph (1876) is still in wide circulation.
Among his other publications were Strength of Wrought-Iron Bridge Members (1882), and A Treatise on the Compound Engine (1884) written in collaboration with John Turnbull.
Achievements
Robinson established a department of mechanical engineering in Illinois Industrial University (now the University of Illinois) in 1870, which was was one of the first in the United States.
Robinson was a pioneer in the field of experimental instruction in engineering education, and as early as 1870 ideas now accepted as fundamental in this field had become settled convictions with him. He was instrumental in organizing in 1890 an association of teachers of mechanical engineering which in 1893 became the Society for the Promotion of Engineering Education.

Connections
Robinson was twice married - first on December 29, 1863, to Mary Elizabeth Holden, and after her death, on April 12, 1888, to Mary Haines of Ada, Ohio. He was survived by his second wife and three daughters by his first marriage. He died in Columbus, at the age of seventy-two.
