Auerbach graduated from Williams College, where he earned his Bachelor of Arts in 1957.
After his graduation, Stuart Auerbach spent the late 1950s and early 1960s working for newspapers in Massachusetts and Florida. Auerbach joined the staff at the Washington Post in 1966 as a science and medical correspondent. He would spend the rest of his career at the Post, where he executed a number of diverse assignments such as Middle East correspondent (1976-1977), legal correspondent, columnist (1977-1979), South Asia correspondent (1979-1983), economics correspondent (1983-1993).
After a year's hiatus in 1994, Auerbach returned to work as a health reporter from 1995 to 1997.
After retiring, he helped to set up the Media Development Loan Fund, an organization that gave financial support to newspapers around the world in an effort to free them from the constraints of being supported by their governments.
Auerbach was a member of the National Association of Science Writers. He was also a member of the Council on Foreign Relations Clubs: National Press, Federal City (Washington), Overseas Press (New York City), and Delhi Gymkhana.
Stuart married Lena F. Lee on September 29, 1995.
