( The thesis of this study is that Christian Science was ...)
The thesis of this study is that Christian Science was a manifestation of the unrest gripping the United States after the Civil War. The age in which the movement flowered was, at once, sordid and gilded, commercial and optimistic. The stormy way through which the new religion passed was, in a sense, the road upon which all new ideas and schemes are tried. Mrs. Eddy's vision was subjected to reasoned and irrational scrutiny for 40 years. In truth, Christian Science belonged only tenuously to a modern era. It reflected the prevailing optimism, progressivism, utopianism, and feminism of the Gilded Age but did not illuminate the stage with a unique light of its own.

(Now in stock! The Concept of Zionist Dissent in the Americ...)
Now in stock! The Concept of Zionist Dissent in the American Mind 1917-1941 by Stuart E. Knee, Ph.D. is a massively researched, well-reasoned interpretation, and pioneering study of Jewish nationalism's American phase during the period immediately preceding the watershed years of 1945 to 1948 when the Jewish State of Israel was restored after nearly two thousand years of exile. Professor Knee convincingly documents the full range of American dissent and opposition to Jewish nationalism and ties it to the larger American issues of the times. Professor Knee makes it clear that restoring Israel in its ancient land was an idea before it emerged as a complex political reality and so it was first a topic of philosophical debate for American Jews; it becomes involved in Versailles diplomacy and thus became an American foreign policy matter; it was sponsored by Britain and, in the eyes of some American radicals, that bound it irrevocably to imperialism; to some Jews and Arabs it was perceived as a challenge to the American ethnic dream of the "melting pot". Finally, it generated such intense feeling that few Americans were left untouched or unmoved by it and very few remained unaware of it as an historic, mystical and highly disturbing phenomenon which has unquestionably left its imprint on American society. With new and perhaps seminal attitudinal changes that have begun within some of Israel's fellow Semitic brethren Arab countries, the comments about this book by Carl Herman Vosos, American Jewish Archives, are especially relevant today: "Knee's writing is exciting, the research excellent and his objectivity is commendable...it is invaluable and deserves to be on the Middle East shelf of every library in America." The American Historical Review said "The author has gathered a great number of quotations...There is much material in this book." In his Introduction to The Concept of Zionist Dissent in the American Mind 1917-1941, distinguished scholar Professor Herbert Druks, Ph.D. correctly states: "In this unique book, Dr. Stuart E. Knee has given us a definitive study of Zionist dissent in America from 1917 to 1941...We owe Dr. Knee a debt of gratitude for uneathing this history for us so that we can see our own time a bit more clearly." Stuart E. Knee, Ph.D., is now Professor of History at the College of Charleston. Dr. Knee is the author many articles published in refereed scholarly journals on a variety of subjects, and is the author of two other books, Hervey Allen: A Literary Historian in America 1889-1950, published in 1988, and Christian Science in the Age of Mary Baker Eddy, published in 1994. He became a biographee in WHO'S WHO IN AMERICA in 2005 in recognition of his scholarly achievements. This book should be required reading for everyone interested in a possible genuine peace process between Israel and its Arab neighbors, and belongs on the shelves of every library in the world because of the worldwide focus on the importance of possibly resolving Middle East problems in accord with the core values of the Semitic prophets from Abraham and Moses through Jesus and Muhammad, always keeping in mind that the ancient Jewish State of Israel, now restored, provides "the cadre with time in grade" of the line of Semitic prophets.
