Han Su-san was born on November 13, 1946, in Inje, Gangwon Province, Republic of Korea.
Han Su-san attended Chuncheon High School. In 1965, he entered the Chuncheon College of Education from which he transferred to Kyung Hee University, where he received a degree in Korean Literature.
Han Su-san made his debut as a poet in 1967. In 1970, he started to publish fiction novels that soon became popular. At the height of his career in 1981 Han Su-san contributed to a serialized novel that satirized then Korean president Chun Doo-hwan. He and other newspaper workers were tortured and humiliated by the government at the JoongAng Ilbo where the novel was being serialized. After that Han Su-san moved to Japan in 1988, where he wrote several stories about Korean residents of Japan. In 1992, he returned to South Korea. Nowadays he teaches Korean Literature at Sejong University.
Han Su-san became a Catholic in 1989. His baptismal name is John Cristomo.
